Statement
My practice has been evolving around the theme of Hope in Chaos. These recent years of chaotic and anxiety filled times have found me seeking places of solace and beauty. While the broader world has been a shocking roller coaster, my personal world has been rocked by several big losses in a relatively short period of time. Given the level of grieving I experienced, I turned to making art as my way of processing so much loss and uncertainty. My studio became my safe place to deal with a myriad of feelings, especially as the losses compounded.
You will see many of the pieces have a secret portal or a pathway or a place removed from the world. Many of my pieces are also influenced by my interest in astronomy and the creation of new worlds. I read an article that discussed a quote attributed to Buddha – “If we could understand a single flower, we could understand the whole universe”. There is some dispute about the attribution but other references to a similar concept are found in Tennyson’s poem “Flower in the Crannied Wall” and Blake’s “Auguries of Innocence” – excerpt below.
To see a World in a Grain of Sand.
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower.
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand.
And Eternity in an hour.
My style has been evolving and changing dramatically over the last year. I’m curious to see what next year brings, in terms of healing and insight. I continue to explore a variety of mediums, learning as much as I can, applying what makes sense for me and growing as a person and as an artist.
